NASA scientists have developed an innovative battery that does not contain lithium
Employees of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration have been working on an innovative battery for several years. And here are the first results of their work.

The primary goals of the scientists were to increase the capacity of the battery and optimize the power-to-weight ratio of the device. The work is carried out as part of the SABERS project, its ultimate goal is to create a solid-state battery that can be safely used in aircraft.

Initially, the specialists set themselves the task of doing without lithium, and instead they used sulfur and selenium. Thus, it was possible to achieve optimization of the mass of the battery due to a denser stacking of cells. Previously, each battery would have to be placed in a separate steel case, but now they can be placed in a separate capsule.

The new batteries showed a power per kilogram result of 500 watts per hour. Classical and similarly sized lithium-ion batteries achieve half the performance. The new batteries also handle pressure twice as well, do not ignite from physical impact, discharge ten times slower and have twice the temperature threshold.

The main goal of the SABERS project is to develop a capacious and safe battery for aircraft. From the very beginning, they have their own tactics, and they stick to it.
