Invented a muscular drive that can lift hundreds of times its own weight
Researchers at South Korea's Ajou University partnered with Samsung Electronics to bring to life an experimental bionic muscle actuator based on a shape memory material. According to the creators, the device can lift a weight eight hundred times heavier than its own. The specific power of the device is 1.7 kW/kg, which is eight times higher than the identical parameter of biological muscles (0.2 kW/kg).

The main parts of the mechanism are two elastic plates and a wire made of material with a shape memory effect. The drive configuration is arcuate, which provides low voltage amplification when activated. The prototype weighing 0.22g was able to take a load of 80g. The unique layout of the device allows for increased deformation upon activation and increased strength compared to other amplifying units.

The device is easy to manufacture, and due to its low weight and increased efficiency, it can be widely used in the AR industry and robotics. A group of a number of such actuators can be used to improve sensory response in virtual reality devices.
