Experts from a well-known research laboratory conducted tests on a smartphone camera from Google and shared the results. The tests were carried out in comparison with the regular Pixel 6 and iPhone SE (2022).
The Pixel 6a has a 12.2 MP camera with a rather outdated Sony IMX363 sensor, f/1.7 lens, phase detection autofocus and optical stabilization. The second lens is reserved for a 12 MP wide-angle module with a viewing angle of 114 degrees.
Professionals liked the brightness and accurate color reproduction in photos and videos. Color rendition did get the maximum score, which was also achieved by the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. The experts also noted the high-quality exposure, as well as the breadth of the dynamic range indoors and in bright light. They even called stabilization when shooting video one of the best tests ever.
Of the minuses, DxOMark employees noted a significant drop in detail in poor lighting and when zooming the image due to the lack of a telephoto lens, visible noise in any shooting conditions. Also not satisfied with the lack of display of background blur in portrait shooting before the picture is taken.
As a result, the Pixel 6a scored 130 points, which put it in second place in the High-End behind the regular Pixel 6. In the overall standings, it managed to climb up to 21st place exactly between the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max.
