California-based Evonix has created a unique battery that can be recharged as quickly as filling up the tank of a conventional gasoline-powered car. The battery is also as durable as possible, because after a thousand charge cycles it retains 93% of its original capacity.

The developers tested fast charging EV batteries with a capacity of 0.27 Ah on their own silicon Li-ion cells with a technologically advanced 3D architecture. The cells of these batteries have a 100% active silicon anode, which allows you to store 2 times more lithium compared to the graphite anodes used in most modern Li-ion cells (1800 mAh/cm3 versus 800 mAh/cm3).

It should be noted that one of the main disadvantages of silicon is its high density. But Evonix was able to overcome this problem by surrounding the cells with a stainless steel system to prevent battery swelling. The developers also applied the process of the so-called "pre-lithiation" and introduced a swelling limit. As a result, the element is able to charge 80% in just over 5 minutes and 98% in 10 minutes. The numbers achieved surpass the US Advanced Battery Consortium's goal of reaching 80% charge in 15 minutes.

According to Harrold Rast, CEO and President of Evonix, the company is pleased that their development will be relevant for both electric vehicle manufacturers and public and private companies involved in installing charging stations for electric car owners. Evonix is confident that their batteries will enable the infrastructure to fully electrify the automotive industry even faster.
