Former Apple employee and lead iPod developer Tony Fadell recently released a book called Build, in which he shared interesting behind-the-scenes information and experience from working in various companies.

One of the most interesting facts that Fadell spoke about is the details of the creation of the very first iPhone model. So, the then head of the company, Steve Jobs, demanded that they develop not an independent device, but a redesigned version of the iPod. Jobs believed that the design of the iPod, which users loved, should be reflected in the smartphone, so he wanted the Click Wheel to appear on the iPhone.

According to Fadell, the team tried for a long time to adapt the scroll wheel for normal data entry, but all their attempts were in vain. However, Jobs continued to insist on his own. And yet, in the end, all members of the team convinced the boss that it was impossible to use the wheel in a smartphone.

Despite this, the team still built a prototype iPhone with the Click Wheel. According to the images in the book, the prototype was similar to the iPod in that it had the same wheel and screen. On the reverse side were the number keys and the camera.

Initially, Fadell welcomed the idea of introducing a scroll wheel into a smartphone, but over time he realized that it could not be implemented in a normal way. As a result, the engineers settled on a large touch screen and an OS based on Mac OS X.
