Scientists have created a powerful battery the size of a grain of sand
Chemnitz University of Technology engineers have created a tiny battery with a cross section of 1 mm2. The inspiration for its development was the Swiss roll.

Like the famous dessert, consisting of biscuit layers with large layers of jam inside, the battery was assembled from current collectors and electrode strips of polymers, metals and dielectrics, which were stretched over the surface of the plate.

When the layers are separated, stress is relieved, the materials at this moment are folded relative to each other and take the form of a roll. The result is a self-twisting microscopic battery of a cylindrical configuration. The minimum energy density of the battery is 100 µWh per 1 cm2. Such dimensions make it possible to integrate the battery into chips with electrical circuits. Such circuits can take the form of biocompatible sensors in the human body. Engineers report that the battery is capable of powering various devices for about ten hours. The technology has a huge potential, so we should expect the creation of more powerful similar microenergy carriers.
