In the Milky Way galaxy, a large grouping of previously unseen planets, numbering 70-170, was discovered. According to the European Southern Observatory, they are located in star-forming space near the Sun. A distinctive feature of the planets is their free movement - they do not move around the luminary like the Earth and other objects of the solar system.

The works of scientists were published in the publication Nature Astronomy. In the process of collecting information, information was used from the Gaia telescope, as well as the Very Large Telescope (VLT), the Visible and IR Survey Telescope for Astronomical Research (VISTA), the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) and the MPG / ESO telescope, and other devices. To achieve the final result, the team used tens of thousands of photos, which took up terabytes of data volumes.

Wandering planets are difficult to find, since they are hidden away from the stars that illuminate them. Nevertheless, scientists managed to notice these still hot celestial bodies due to temperature-sensitive telescope cameras.



Now, after the work done, astronomers have suggested that there may be billions of such planets. The reason for the formation of such objects can be gravitational collapse, which is extremely insignificant for the appearance of a star. It is also quite possible for planets to fall out of other systems.

It is difficult to count the actual number of roaming planets. Analysis of the data makes it impossible to calculate the masses of all objects. So, celestial bodies with this indicator, thirteen times exceeding the parameters of Jupiter, apparently are not able to be called planets, therefore they were not considered. In addition, it became necessary to take into account the age of the study area. If the region is old, then the brightest bodies in the collection are possibly 13 times heavier than Jupiter. Otherwise, their mass is less. Taking into account the ambiguity of the age indicators of the space of the wandering planets, it can be from 70 to 170.
