TSMC unveils new N4X process technology for performance computing
Semiconductor materials manufacturer TSMC presented the N4X process technology. It will be used in high performance computing (HPC) products.

The company notes that this process technology has become the first TSMC solution, which will be focused on the most productive computing operations. The N4X will allow you to maximize the performance and limit clock speed of the 5nm line of technology. The X indicates that the solution is targeted at HPC products.

According to Kevin Zhang, senior vice president of business development at TSMC, the process has been combined with 3DFabric packaging technology to maximize productivity. Also, according to the company, during the development of N4X, the 5-nanometer technology was improved, which made it possible to expand the functionality for high-performance computing. In particular, the operation with current and maximum clock frequency has been optimized, and a better supply of energy at peak loads has been ensured. Modernization in this direction allowed for a 15% increase in productivity compared to the N5 process technology and up to 4% - with N4P at 1.2 volts. The N4X also allows you to work with voltages over 1.2 volts. At the same time, TSMC ensures that developers have the ability to apply the common N5 process design rules to accelerate product development on N4X. The solution is expected to go into production in 2023.
