Microsoft released a big autumn update for Windows 10 and moved the system to a new cycle of update releases
Windows 10 21H2 Semi-Annual Big Update (Build 19044) began rolling out on November 16. At the same time, Microsoft has adjusted the schedule for the development of updates for the "top ten" and Windows 11 - according to the new plan, systems will be updated once a year. Thus, Windows 10 will be updated in the 2nd half of 2022.

Two years ago, the company began releasing updates according to an updated scheme: the main changes occurred in the spring, while in the fall there were auxiliary updates that made the system more reliable and stable. The current November update will be the last one according to this scheme.

The main innovation of the fresh Windows 10 is support for Linux programs with a visual interface (GUI). This compatibility enhancement is the largest since the full-featured Linux kernel was introduced in the 2004 Top 10. The update will remove the need for X11 redirection, allowing authors to install GUI editors, toolkits, and programs for Windows by default. creation and testing of software on Linux.

Other innovations include the emergence of the WPA3 H2E security protocol and an easier way to authenticate without using a password in Windows Hello for Business.

The very first Windows 10 was released on July 29, 2015. The main support of the system will take place at least until October 14, 2025, after which an additional several years of extended technical support are calculated. Thus, before the end of basic support, system owners can count on 2-3 updates. However, in light of the priority given to the new Windows 11, one should not expect drastic changes in the top ten. Currently, Windows 10 is installed on more than 1.3 billion devices worldwide. According to StarCounter, the total market share of the system is over 81%. After its release, Windows 10 was able to overtake Windows 7 in distribution in two and a half years.

It is unclear how soon Windows 11 will be able to overtake its predecessor in prevalence. However, Microsoft is taking many steps to achieve this goal. So, the new OS has now become available for devices with system requirements that meet the "top ten" version 2004. It is quite possible that Microsoft will persuade users to switch from the old system to the new one. Similar actions to promote the fresh "operating system" have already been made - Windows 10 on Arm no longer supports x64 application emulation.
