On September 23, the European Commission will come up with a proposal to establish a single charging standard for all electronic devices. Probably, this initiative will hit hardest on Apple, whose devices are equipped with a proprietary Lightning connector.

The commission is expected to require all companies to install a USB Type-C connector. At the same time, a prescription will come into effect, according to which the manufacturer must prescribe a universal fast charging protocol at the software level. The regulations will apply to smartphones, tablets, headsets, cameras and other electronics. The list of exclusions will include readers and wireless storage devices.

According to the representative of the European Commission, the rules will be introduced within a year. Further, the member states of the European Union will have another 12 months to incorporate the prescriptions into their legislation. After that, manufacturers will receive another year to fulfill the requirements. As a result, a single standard will be in effect from about mid-2024.

Also, the European Commission will require smartphone manufacturers to refuse to complete devices with chargers. This initiative aims to reduce the amount of e-waste.
