Research has shown that dark theme does not help much to extend battery life.
Recently, manufacturers of mobile devices have been actively promoting the thesis that the dark theme helps to increase the autonomy of a smartphone, but this is far from the case. Researchers at the American Perdue University have found that dark mode has minimal impact on power consumption, given how most users use their gadget in everyday life.

According to the results of the study, it was found that the dark theme significantly affects the autonomy only when switching from a light interface with a brightness of about 100%. In fact, for most users, this indicator is in the range of 30-50%, which makes it possible to increase autonomy by only 3-9%, and such an increase does not allow you to feel an increase in operating time.

The minimum number of users keep the brightness at 100% constantly, so it is not possible to hope for a significant improvement in autonomy. Therefore, the researchers came to the conclusion that the dark theme as a panacea for increasing the battery life is a marketing ploy.

As one of the test participants noted, when a full-fledged dark mode appeared on devices, there were still no effective tools for calculating the power consumption of display pixels. At the same time, such a toolkit has appeared, which will allow developers to create more energy efficient software.

During the tests, six applications from the Play Market were considered: branded Google applications News, Phone, Calendar, as well as YouTube and Calculator. Research was conducted on 2nd, 4th and 5th generation Pixel phones and the Moto Z3.
